The power of effective communication in the online space

Captivating one’s audience in the online sphere can be challenging. People get bored easily or get distracted by so many factors. So how does one stand out? According to communications and events industry expert, Monette Iturralde-Hamlin, Greek philosopher Aristotle proposed three important things every communicator should keep in mind. What you say (content), how you put your message together (organization), and how you bring the message across (delivery) are key ingredients in acing your presentations, especially in the online space.

In TeamAsia’s recent Experience Online: Be Bright in the Virtual Light webinar, Iturralde-Hamlin shared some tips and tricks for people to present with impact in the virtual space. “There are two parts one should consider for effective presentations: your preparation and delivery,” she related.

Here are the two factors that play important roles in capturing your audience’s attention, and communicating your message effectively. Once you’ve mastered them, you become more empowered to talk about your topic with ease.

Preparing for Success
In the online presentation game, preparation is just as important as the actual presentation itself. To effectively prepare for any online presentation, whether it be a report, panel discussion or interview, Iturralde-Hamlin recommends preparing with POWER.

P stands for Prepare. You need to determine your objectives, audience and role or scope of work. O stands for Organize. You need to arrange your thoughts logically and seamlessly. W means to Write. There are two things you should write down: your introduction and ending. You need to be able captivate your audience with your introduction, and make a lasting impact with your ending. E refers to Edit. When preparing for your presentation, keep it simple. Don’t use multisyllabic words and hot buttons (words that can turn off an audience). Lastly, R means to Review. Take a step back, and assess if your output accomplishes your objective.

Preparation is only one half of your presentation. In the online space, the delivery of your message is just as important. It also has the power to leave a lasting impression on your audience.

Delivering with Confidence
When delivering presentations, especially in the online space, remember this equation, presentations are 20% verbal, and 80% non-verbal. The words you use have a huge impact on the effectiveness of your piece. That’s the 20 percent of your delivery.

The other 80 percent is your nonverbal communication a.k.a your body language. It’s important that you be mindful of energy. Even if you’re talking to a web camera, you should maintain eye contact. Your posture and gestures should convey your message and radiate confidence. In the virtual world, your energy, confidence level and brightness can make or break your connection with the audience.

These pointers are just a few things you should know to become the best communicator you can be in the online space.
